Groovy Giraffes (Year 2)
Welcome to the Groovy Giraffes Class! We are Year Two.

What we will be learning this year:
Theme: Moon Zoom
This half term, the children will have the opportunity to explore a dramatic crash scene- including a broken spaceship and Martian footprints! In Science, the children will learn about the properties of different materials- and, work scientifically to explore how the shape of some materials can be changed. In Design and Technology, the children will be encouraged to design- and, build a wheeled space buggy to explore the surface of the moon. In History, they will learn about the significant achievements of Neil Armstrong. In Geography, they will name- and, locate the continents and oceans on the globe. In RE, the theme is God.
Theme: Towers, Tunnels and Turrets
This half term, the children will visit Tutbury Castle and discover more about the people who lived and worked there in the past. They will learn about the different parts of the castle. In Design and Technology, the children will be encouraged to use a variety of materials, tools and techniques to construct a castle with typical castle features. In Science, they will work scientifically to find the best material to build a more secure castle and keep the princess safe from the hungry dragon. In RE, the focus for learning is Creation.
Theme: Scented Garden
This half term, the children will explore plants in the local environment and they will learn to describe how seeds grow into mature plants when they climb the enormous beanstalk to the giant’s castle! They will work scientifically to show that plants need light, water and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy. In Geography, the children will learn to make a simple map and describe their route through the scented garden. In Art and Design, they will be encouraged to make detailed observational drawings of scented flowers and explore the work of an artist (making links to their own work). In RE, the theme is Incarnation.
Theme: Wriggle and Crawl
This half term, the children will learn about living things and their habitats. The children will explore the local environment on a minibeast hunt and describe how the habitat provides for the basic needs of different kinds of animals. They will be introduced to the lifecycle of a known minibeast and learn about simple food chains in the local environment. In Art and Design, the children will use a variety of materials tools and techniques to create some imaginative minibeast sculptures to display in the classroom. In RE, the focus for learning is Gospel. Come and join us at the Ugly Bug Ball to celebrate our learning at the end of term!
Theme: Rio de Vida!
The Year Two children will complete SATs during this half term.
This half term, the children will experience the thrill of the carnival in Rio! In Geography, the children will locate Brazil on the globe and use a variety of sources to explore the human and physical features of the country. There will be time investigate geographical similarities and differences between Rio and Derby. In Art and Design, the children will use a variety of materials to create colourful carnival masks and headdresses. In Design and Technology, they will have the opportunity to follow simple recipes safely and hygienically and make traditional Brazilian cakes and puddings to celebrate carnival time in Derby. Also, they will design and make vibrant Brazilian percussion instruments to create their own samba band! In RE, the theme is Salvation. Celebrate Carnival time with us and join in the fun!
Theme: Rio de Vida, Enterprise, Health and Fitness Fortnight, Transition
We will continue our theme, Rio de Vida, for two weeks. The children will participate in Enterprise Weeks. Health and Fitness Week will be a busy and active time. The children will take part in lots of sport and fitness activities and it will be Sports Day. They will learn about keeping safe, building positive relationships and drug safety. During transition week, the children will be spending some time at their new schools, with their new teachers. This will give them the opportunity to show just how clever they are!
