New Communities Achievement Team (NCAT)

We continue to see an increasing number of children and families arriving in our school unable to speak English and without knowledge of the British education system. Many of our families have little experience of formal education in their home country, and speak languages that have not been traditionally widely spoken by staff or pupils in Derby Schools. To help us support our families and children to integrate into our school family and also the city, we work in close partnership with the New Communities Achievement Team (NCAT) as a sold service through Derby City Council.

The New Communities Achievement Team was established to work with and support new arrivals to Derby from outside the UK. The team has a particular focus on working with families of Roma heritage and Central Eastern European families. NCAT work in partnership with other agencies such as health, places of worship and other community organisations to identify new arrival families when they first arrive into the city. This enables the team to work closely with the families to integrate them into the city of Derby and ensure they have the correct information and expectations required regarding safeguarding, education, housing and school attendance. The team undertake individual case work, group work with parents/carers, children and young people and will also advise and support teams across the City.

Currently, Miss Alena, through NCAT, works in school on Tuesday mornings, Wednesday (all day) and Friday mornings. Further information on the language support that we offer to our families can be found here.
