Introduction

"The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment." (The National Curriculum 2014)

At St Chad’s, we believe that the development of language and literacy skills is of the highest priority. We have a diverse intake of children who between them speak many different languages. Whilst we value all languages, our aim is for all children to develop the necessary skills to become effective users of the English language.

In studying English, our children develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening enabling them to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. Our teaching and learning recognises the current thinking on the National Curriculum as well as harnessing aspects of other creative and innovative approaches in order to provide a broad and balanced scheme of work for our children.

English is taught as a discrete lesson on a daily basis and lessons follow the National Curriculum for English. Wherever possible, cross-curricular links are made with English through thematic plans. Children are taught in mixed ability groups for English and ability groups for phonics and spelling. We teach children to understand a range of genres, building on children’s understanding year after year, ensuring continuity and progression in the teaching of English.

We want to provide our children with a clear purpose and audience for writing. We use two main types of writing across school: writing to entertain and to inform. Every unit of writing throughout school is matched to a quality-text to provide a relevant stimulus for reading and writing. Text-level work (genre outcomes) and word and sentence level objectives are mapped alongside to ensure coverage is met. This means that the children are equipped with the skills and tools needed to write fluently for a range of meaningful purposes throughout the years.
