School Readiness

What is School Readiness?

School Readiness is about helping children to get ready for starting the Reception year. For some children and parents, starting 'big school' can seem very daunting.

At St Chad's, we recognise that starting school is an exciting but significant milestone in a child's development. We value strong home-school partnerships in order to support a smooth transition to our Reception year. We run a number of 'Stay and Learn' sessions and parent workshops on School Readiness both before your child starts school and throughout the Reception year. We want to work together with you to ensure that your child feels happy, safe, cared for and ready to learn.

The 'Road to Reception'
We have devised our own 'Road to Reception' map. These are useful milestones that will help your child to get off to a flying start in Reception. For example, your child will be off to the best possible start if they can:

  • Learn and play
  • Talk, listen carefully and follow instructions
  • Settle calmly without their mummy/daddy
  • Go to the toilet and wash their hands

Please remember that all children are different and all children develop at their own rate. If you have any concerns about your child's progress in any of these areas, please speak to your child's class teacher or our Foundation Stage Leader, Miss Gilsenan.
